Adjective [Latin]

IPA: [ˈpʊ.tɛr] [Classical-Latin], [ˈpuː.ter] (note: modern Italianate Ecclesiastical)
Etymology: From Proto-Indo-European *puH-. The same root is found in Latin pūs (“pus, foul matter”) and pūteō (“to be rotten”), Sanskrit पूयति (pū́yati, “stinks, rots”), Ancient Greek πῠ́ον (pŭ́on, “discharge from a sore”), πῡ́θω (pū́thō, “to rot”), Gothic 𐍆𐌿𐌻𐍃 (fūls, “foul”), and Old English fūl (“foul”) (whence English foul). It is unclear why puter has short -u-, since preconsonantal *-uH- usually became long -ū-. Per Schrijver, it can potentially be explained either by shortening of *ū in a pretonic syllable (*puH-trí- > *pūtrí- > putri-), simplification of a laryngeal before a two-consonant *-TC- sequence, or by a variant root form *pHu-. Like all other Latin three-termination adjectives, its stem originally ended in *-ri-: the nominative forms in Classical Latin were affected by a combination of sound changes and analogy. The masculine nominative singular puter (found in Varro and Ovid) would be the regular phonetic outcome of an earlier form *putr̥s (with syllabic *r̥), from syncope of original putris. (Compare ter from Proto-Indo-European *trís.) It is also declined as a two-termination adjective with the alternative masculine nominative singular putris (e.g. "lapis ipse gracilis et putris", Pliny Epistulae 10.39). "etymology_text": "From Proto-Indo-European *puH-. \"lapis ipse gracilis et putris\", Pliny Epistulae 10.39).",

"etymology_text": "From Proto-Indo-European *puH-. \"lapis ipse gracilis et putris\", Pliny Epistulae 10.39).",
